Any information collected at this site is entirely confidential and will not be distributed, disclosed or traded with any third parties. Canongate Books does not collect 'personally identifying information' about individuals except when specifically and knowingly provided by such individuals. We only use the data to provide you with the services you have asked for. All data is collected lawfully and in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

Canongate Books users should be aware that if they voluntarily disclose personal information (e.g., username, email address) on the public areas of the site (when writing articles or posting comments, for example), that this information can be collected and used by others and may result in unsolicited messages from other posters or parties.

While your 'personally identifying information' is protected as outlined above, we sometimes collect what is legally referred to as 'anonymous aggregated data' - in other words information that relates simply to you as a generic person and not an individual - for statistical purposes. This information is analysed by us to create profiles for the separate parts of the site, but contains no 'personally identifying information'. We also do not link this information with visitors to the site.

We do this because we like to know what parts of our site are visited often, those which are not, and which are the most popular. This information means that we can improve the site and concentrate on making sure that you enjoy it.

Canongate Books may place a "cookie" in the browser file of a visitor to Canongate.net's computer. The cookie itself does not contain any 'personally identifying information'. What it will do is enable Canongate Books to relate a user's visit and use of the site to information that the user has specifically and knowingly provided to Canongate Books . In other words it makes us run things smoother.

Most browsers are initially set to accept cookies. If you prefer, you can set your browser to refuse cookies or to alert you when cookies are being sent. However, it is possible that some parts of Canongate Books will not function properly if you do so.
