I've just read news that The Hurt Locker's won the best feature prize at the annual Producers Guild Of America awards. Dan suggested I watch the film when I wrote my piece on war in film. I'm pleased to say that I have (thank you, Cameo Cinema and its Sunday double feature, which is free for members of the Picturehouse chain) and the film deserves any and all critical and prize recognition it gets.
For those of you who haven't seen it, this film tells the story of a bomb disposal team in Iraq. It's violent and bloody — there are no holds barred and those who are unwilling to face that war has very ugly consequences (especially when they haven't been well thought-out) for both the occupied and the occupiers, especially when it comes to their psychological health.
"The rush of battle is a potent and often lethal addiction, for war is a drug."
War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, Chris Hedges
I can't recommend this movie enough.
