Meet At The Gate is taking a different interpretation of the New Year, New You marketing message tthis month, in an occasional series called New Beginnings - we're interested in reading your recommendations for cultural objects that involve a Brand New You.

We don't mean going on a diet or that making dreaded resolution to finally quit smoking (again). We want more. We want to find out what we should be reading, watching and listening to based on the idea of reinvention: whether it means faking one's death and fleeing the country or just changing one's image drastically to feel young and fresh again (hello, Madonna).

We want to discover fantastic new authors, musicians, theatre and artists who have made reinvention a virtue. We hope you'll join us!

For every American, there is one prediction that will come true in 2010. WE COUNT! But the way the Census is starting, I’d think Homeland Security was in charge. A few months ago, a woman came out of nowhere and asked me the address of my bean patch.

Soon I’ll get a survey that demands to know everything except where I was conceived. It’s illegal and futile to resist. I will be enumerated and absorbed into a Congressional district. Of course for me, that’s all of Montana. We are sparse not dense.

Nancy Gibbs has a delightful essay in January’s Time Magazine that cautions us to “plan ahead before history changes everything.” I like that idea. I think I’ll move my bean patch.
