Cutting arts funding doesn't look good for Canada, but the scene seems to be responding robustly. GEIST Magazine is a 'magazine of ideas and culture', published quarterly in print and online.
There's a lot of good writing here, as well as photography, poetry and reviews. They're currently running the Geist Literal Literary Postcard Story Contest, where the maximum length of an original story (using a postcard as inspiration) is a mere 500 words, with cash prizes to be won.
It isn't just the 'lure' of cash - the first prize is $250 less a $20 entry fee that also includes a one-year subscription to the magazine. Most people are justifiably leery of writing contests that ask for an entry fee, but GEIST gives back so much in the editorial of the magazine (as well as free content online) that it's worth it.
In an age where traditional models of publishing are struggling to survive, we commend GEIST for not being afraid to get support from their fans.
