It's with great relief that we found out via Chekhov's Mistress that caffeine makes people smarter. Caffeine is virtually indispensible here at Canongate, and knowing more about its benefits (or at least what happens when it's taken away) makes us feel a lot better!

That's not the only reason we're a fan of the site - publisher and editor Bud Parr writes about various things, but the weblog tends to centre around literary topics or things closely-related to literature. As with all good literary sites, we are introduced to new voices and get some thoughtful opinion of established authors (witness the less-than-fawning reaction to Pynchon's new novel Inherent Vice and Melville's Moby Dick), but there is also a dash of personality with Bud Parr's site - we learn how kid-friendly the iPhone really is, and you know how much we support the spread of the iPhone at Canongate!
