Thursday 1 October 2009

As the nights draw in and the temperature plummets (in the Northern hemisphere, anyway), the staff at Canongate are busy working on our books being published in time for Christmas and early 2010, but all work and no play make publishers very dull, so here's what some of us are excited about this October.

Well besides the Frankfurt Book Fair, I’m buzzed to see Nick Cave play Edinburgh’s Picture House on 13th October, the Scottish leg of his new European tour. He’s playing music with Warren and Marty from the Bad Seeds, as well as reading from the new book. Francis

Dizzee Rascal, The Doves, Florence and the Machine, Robbie Williams are going to be performing at the Electric Proms at the Roundhouse in London this month - OMG it will be immense! JenniferT

I am excited about David Vann’s debut novel Legend of a Suicide – he has been tipped as a major new talent. And a new singer called Carrie. Angela

I’m pretty excited about Julian Casablancas from The Strokes releasing his much anticipated solo album Phrazes For The Young in October! Kids in leather jackets are holding their breaths everywhere... Kirsty

I’m excited about reading the manuscript of The Bradbury Report, a book we’re publishing in April next year. As an Ian Rankin fan, I’m also eagerly awaiting the publication of his first graphic novel, Dark Entries. The Cameo cinema will be screening a George Romero zombie-fest at the end of the month that I’ve already Twittered over-excitedly about. Spex

What We're Excited About is a new monthly feature on Meet At The Gate, where a few Canongaters share what we're looking forward to in the month to come. Want us to be excited about your book, film or theatre premiere, album or concert? Send us an email to tell us about it (make sure the recipient is Website enquiries).

I've actually got a proof of Legend of a Suicide - Tom, your quick review here has really intrigued me. I'll definitely be reading it soon!

I enjoyed David Vann's book Legend of a Suicide very much, but it is definitely not a straightforward read. Vann has cleverly interwoven four accounts of his real-life's father's suicide, all from different perspectives, creating a legend (or myth), in the way folk tales were assembled and refined through the processes of oral tradition. The reader is left asking the question, "what really happened", and it is one of the few books I have read recently which has caused me to reflect on it for several days after I finished it. Tom
