Short stories have a hard time in book stores – most often relegated to the back shelves and rarely making the 3-for-2 tables. Here at Canongate, we’re champions of the short story, believing there are many excellent authors who inhabit the genre - David Eagleman, Miranda July and Nam Le are three recent examples from our list.
And so we've been keenly following the postings of Harper Perennial's Fifty-Two Stories, a blog that posts a new story every week. We're currently almost at the halfway mark - story 25 is titled Immortal, and it comes from a collection of stories by Alex Burrett that's about to be published in the US. Many of the stories are also classics, most recently Leo Tolstoy's Alyosha the Pot.
Other publishers will also continue, we hope, to support quality short story publishing - this imprint clearly does, and the Internet literati is all the better for it.
