No one is denying that the publishing business is extremely tough right now. In the best of times, magazine publishing is also pretty challenging, what with the cycle of more content equals more advertising equals more pages equals more cost equals more content equals more advertising ad infinitum. So it makes perfect sense, in our globally-connected world, to publish a literary magazine online - just as Salt Publishing has done with their Horizon Review.

Launching a literary magazine online means that editor Jane Holland has had the opportunity to select the best poetry, fiction, commentary, and reviews with less of an eye on page numbers and cost control and more on the quality of every submission. Naturally, there is a strong showing of Salt authors and poets, but contemporaries who have had their writings published elsewhere are also well-represented, and in this issue, the op-ed on literary prizes certainly put smiles on our faces.

We can’t wait for issue number two, and we think that after you’ve spent some time staring into the Horizon (Review), you’ll agree.
