It's not every day one finds a weblog-style 'zine that gives you an estimate on how long they think they need your attention, but Opium Magazine does just that. Every piece includes an 'estimated reading time' counter, and they have brilliantly original content – see the current ‘7-line story contest’.

There are too many new writing sites that accept everything, and Opium stands out by taking a more considered approach. Online submissions can take up to three months to appear online, and they ask everyone to be fearless, even if what they submit isn't quite right for Opium (they offer feedback where possible).

It also appears in print, but the online entity is very much its own creature, publishing original content that is not seen in print and vice versa. There are lots of print magazines that try to create something special online but are usually rehashing the same content, so we think Opium Magazine definitely gets it right, and we look forward to more great things on Opium Magazine (online).

If you've got a website or podcast you'd like to submit for Site of the Week consideration, send us an email (make sure the recipient is Website enquiries).
