While no stranger to the British Isles (he presents a show on BBC Five Live at 3.05am every Thursday - yes, there's a podcast), Karl Kruszelnicki or Dr Karl (as he is also known) is a beloved figure in Australia. Everyone, I repeat, everyone, tunes in to Dr Karl when he does Science on Mornings with Zan Rowe every Thursday on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Triple J radio network.
(Triple J is a cooler version of BBC Radio 1, IMHO. How I miss listening to the annual Triple J hottest 100 every Australia Day, although it may have been the public holiday I enjoyed slightly more.)
How do I know that Dr Karl is loved by practically everyone in Australia? His show has been running for such a long time that I don't remember not listening to Dr Karl on the J when I was at Uni, and that was a long time ago (although Dr Karl's presented so many programmes over the years I may be mistaken on the details). He's everywhere! So imagine my delight at discovering his phone-in radio show still going strong, but now it's on steroids - by that I mean it includes an additional podcast and forum.
And the podcast is entirely necessary, because 11am Sydney time is midnight UK time, and since I'm not a Uni student any more, I really need my beauty sleep!
[Edited to add] Gosh, I'm scatterbrained. I enjoy listening to Dr Karl because he knows enough about a lot of things (physics, quantum physics, medicine, anaesthetics, chemistry, general knowledge) to be able to either give callers an answer right away, or to work from "first principles" and make an educated guess. I always learn something when I listen to his weekly programmes - for instance, I did not know that diesel has a detergent component, although I don't know why. I also now know that using sorboleneto wash oneself instead of soap will, in time, eliminate the need to use anti-perspirant deodorant, because sweat itself doesn't smell bad, it's the bacteria, and the sorbolene does something funky with the bacteria so that they don't bother living in our armpits any more.
