Our friends in Australia, Text Publishing, alerted us to this very clever fundraising idea by Obama supporter (and novelist) Ayelet Waldman. It's called Books For Barack, and everyone who donates $250 to Barack Obama's campaign through Ayelet's barackobama.com profile will receive a grab-bag of ten random books.

That's nothing special, you say. Oh yes, it is. These aren't just ten normal books you can buy in any bookstore – these are ten books that are donated by authors from all over the world, and they include rare, highly-collectible, first edition signed copies.

So here at Canongate, we've been thinking about books (if we didn't we'd all be out of a job) and how we can share our good fortune of working with some of the country's (and world's) most exciting authors. Rare, collectible signed first editions seem like a great start.

So, tell us in the comments, which Canongate books would you like to see given away as signed first editions? If we get a large (and hopefully ongoing) list, it gives us a really good place to start thinking about how we could give them away.

(Assuming there are signed first editions available, of course!)

What a great idea! I'd like to see signed first editions of Homicide, The Boat and The Gargoyle. How about some Lanark too?

The End of Mr. Y!

I like this constructive idea from Waldman, definitely an impressive project she won't come to regret - unlike some of the TMI-laden articles about her marriage to Michael Chabon...

I would love to get Andrew Davidson's The Gargoyle as a signed first edition - especially as my copy seems to have gone on an extended Scottish book tour ;)

This year I have also really enjoyed Harry, Revised, David Simon's Homicide, and Under Control by Mark McNay.

I'm easily pleased!
