Metallica unleashed their new album DEATH MAGNETIC worldwide a little over a week ago. It is being widely hailed as a return to form.
But is it their best album?
I don't think so. But here is my run-down of their ten STUDIO albums in order of greatness. Post your top ten in the comments section.
1.MASTER OF PUPPETS. Of course. 'Disposable Heroes' is one of the greatest ever thrash songs.
2.THE BLACK ALBUM. Sick, stripped-back songs and seriously good, bottom-heavy production. Imperious.
3.ST. ANGER. A primal and uncomfortable howl of rage. Brave and ferocious.
4.RIDE THE LIGHTNING. 'Freezing/Can't move at all...I'm trapped under ice!!!’ ‘Nuff said.
5.LOAD. 'Bleeding Me' and 'The Outlaw Torn' drag this into the Top 5. Sprawling epics on which Hetfield found his new voice.
6....AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. This one goes up and down in my estimation but 'Harvester of Sorrow', 'Frayed Ends of Sanity' and 'Dyers Eve' are all classics.
7.KILL ‘EM ALL. This killer lego version of 'Whiplash' got me back into this one, enjoy: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=s_Y9zWjCzuM
8.GARAGE INC. The Sabbath cover is sweet and 'Turn the Page' is good for those world-weary moments.
9.DEATH MAGNETIC. It throws the right shapes but doesn't cohere. Is it that memorable?
10.RE-LOAD. This is a crap album but 'Carpe Diem Baby' and 'Fixxxer' save it from oblivion.
